Before you leave your home country for immigration to Canada and First 30 Days After Landing in Canada or USA- ensure to do these for seamless transition
Prearrival and Post arrival Checklist
If you are immigrating from India or Pakistan to Canada or the United States, having a full clarity of check list to be completed before leaving the home country or the essentials to be done during first 3-4 weeks of landing are very crucial to ease your transition and help you avoid costly mistakes. These are also essential for your long-term success.
Here is suggested checklist before leaving and post arrival in your new home country post immigration and this check list is suggested specifically for newcomers from South Asia.
Don’t forget to do these before you leave your Home Country
Documents and Legal Preparation:
- Passport with valid visa or permit (Temporary Resident Visa, Permanent Resident Card, Study visa, Work Visa as the case may be)
- Original degree certificates, transcripts, job experience letters, awards or accolades if any
- International Driving Permit, and home country license
- Immunization records (especially for children)
- Copies of all documents (hard + cloud backup)
Essential Articles to Pack:
- Weather-appropriate clothes (layered, winter wear). This is even more important if you are planning to settle in colder areas as Toronto/Calgary etc
- Basic medicines + prescriptions, or any other record which would be relevant of physician in Canada to know
- Power adapters (Canada/USA uses 110V). These would be helpful for your laptop or mobile you may be planning to carry from India.
- Utensils, pressure cooker, and small spice kit
- Currency in CAD/USD and an international credit/debit card
- Snacks and ready-to-eat meals for the first week. Please check online as certain snacks as processed meat, semi cooked meat may not be allowed to be carried.
Pre-departure Tips:
- Book temporary housing (1–2 weeks via Airbnb, Booking.com)
- Download maps, transit, and language apps (Google Maps, Transit App, Duolingo)
- Join local Facebook/WhatsApp immigrant groups
POST IMMIGRATION – WEEK 1: LEGAL AND FINANCIAL FOUNDATIONS
Get Government ID prepared and take these Legal Steps
If moving to Canada- Apply for SIN (Service Canada office)
If moving to USA- Apply for SSN (Social Security Office – appointment may be required)
Opening of Bank Account
Choose any bank nearest to your place of residence. Generally in Canada, these banks are popular- RBC, TD, CIBC, Scotiabank
If moving to USA, these banks are popular– Chase, Capital One, Wells Fargo
For opening of the bank account, don’t forget to carry Passport, visa, proof of address, SIN/SSN etc
Get a Local SIM- IN Canada these telecom operators are popular- Chatr, Fido, Public Mobile, Lucky Mobile and in USA, you may choose among T-Mobile, Mint Mobile, Cricket, AT&T Prepaid
Apply for Health Insurance:
In Canada, register for provincial health card (e.g., OHIP, MSP)
If moving to USA, Compare and choose healthcare plans at Healthcare.gov (if not employer-covered)
WEEK 2–3: SETTLING INTO DAILY LIFE
Find suitable Accommodation
You can shortlist same online at RentFaster, Kijiji, Zumper, Facebook Marketplace portals
In USA among the popular portals, some of them are Zillow, Craigslist, Trulia, Apartments.com
You must visit properties in person; avoid paying deposits upfront
Get Transit-Ready:
In Canada, Presto (Toronto), Compass (Vancouver), OPUS (Montreal) are essential to have and in USA, may choose among these options MetroCard (NY), Clipper (Bay Area), city apps
Stock Up from Desi Stores:
You need not miss the food of your home country- India or Pakistan. In Canada stores like Subzi Mandi, Panchvati, Apna Farm offer you most Indian food or spices.
Similarly, in USA Patel Brothers, India Bazaar, Al Madina stores offer you almost everything you would wish for
Join Social Circles
It would be very important and helpful to join social groups as Facebook: “Indians in Vancouver,” “Pakistanis in Dallas” etc. These groups may help you get settled faster.
Must attend Meetup events, mosques, gurdwaras, temples, or community centers
WEEK 4: JOB SEARCH, CREDIT HISTORY AND SCHOOLING FOR KIDS
Job Search Essentials:
- Use Canadian/US-style resume (1-page, no photo)
- Tailor resume with keywords from each job posting
- Write personalized cover letters for each role
- Register on LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, and Workopolis (Canada)
- Apply for a free resume critique via local newcomer support centers (e.g., YMCA, ACCES Employment, WorkBC)
- Network! Attend virtual/in-person job fairs and informational interviews
- Consider volunteering to gain local experience
Build Credit History:
- Apply for a secured credit card or newcomer program card
- Pay bills on time and avoid exceeding 30% of your credit limit
Enroll Kids in School:
- Contact local school board with documents and proof of residence
- Research nearby public schools (free) or daycare options (may be subsidized)
OTHER- NOT TO MISS TIPS
- Emergency numbers to remember are 911 for any emergency, 211 for community help, 311 for city services
- Understand local norms- Punctuality is must, respect privacy of others and allow them personal space
- Use public libraries for free Wi-Fi, printing, and learning
- File taxes annually—even if no income (mandatory in Canada)
- Use community services: YMCA, COSTI, SUCCESS, settlement.org
The first month in a new country sets the tone for your entire journey. With preparation and support, your move can be smoother and more rewarding. Revisit this checklist as needed.
