Women empowerment has been a top priority for the subsequent Canadian governments. By providing various economic supports to the women, the government is trying to promote financial independence among them. The government funding is generally provided through the Women’s Program in Canada. The objective of the Women’s Program is to let women take part in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada. The funding is provided to any eligible organizations who pledge to work on local, regional and national level based on three key areas:
Women’s Program in Canada- initiative by Canadian Government to help you settle faster in Canada and encourage women entrepreneurship
- To end violence against women and girls,
- To improve women’s and girl’s security and prosperity, and
- To encourage women and girls in leadership and decision-making roles.
You can get funding for projects that are of 36 months or less and which address and promotes gender equality in the Canadian society.
The eligibility to the funding is decided on the basis of the criteria set by the Women’s Program. It must be noted that all applicants will not get the funding.
How to Apply for the Women’s Program
The Women’s Program issues specific ‘calls for proposals’ based on targeted themes and pre-determined elements. You can apply if you qualify for any of the themes issued. You can find more about the calls for proposals at the Women’s Program website by Canada Government.
The federal government organization Status of Women Canada also accepts a small number of applications on an ongoing basis for the Women’s Program. It is advisable that you visit the Status of Women Canada official site to consult more on your qualification.
Eligibility for getting assistance under Women’s Program
The eligibility of an applicant will be decided only if the recipient is a legally constituted organization which is/are
- a not-for-profit Canadian organization, excluding labor unions post-secondary educational institutions and religious institutions, or
- a for-profit Canadian organization, however, the nature and intent of the funded activity should not be intended to generate profit, or
- a aboriginal government, or
- The territorial governments and their agencies.
Scope for immigrant women- Can Immigrants to Canada Claim assistance under this Program?
The organization Status of Women Canada has also issued several initiatives to improve prosperity for immigrant women in Canada. The Improve Prosperity for Immigrant Women projects are designed to allow the community stakeholder to understand the needs and economic necessities of immigrant women clearly.
The community stakeholders will work in identifying the priorities of the immigrant women and in turn promise better opportunities, within the communities, to them. This will allow them to address the specific economic needs of the immigrant women. The Status of Women Canada will give priority to those organizations that take a collaborative and multi-stakeholder approach towards the immigrant women and the community.
Quantum of Funding available under Women’s Program
A funding of $200,000 is available for a time-frame of up to 24 months.
There are some key activities that you will have to follow strictly to receive federal funding. These activities have been decided by the Status of Women Canada and mostly aim to financially empower the immigrant women in the new environment they are settling in.
