“Democrats Ask Obama to Pardon All Dreamers in the US. “

They are urging US President Obama to do all that he can before leaving his office by protecting nearly 740,000 undocumented young people to whom US Temporary work permits were granted. They want Obama to release such people from the threat of deportation under the new US administration.

Reps. Luis Gutierrez(D-III), Lucille Roybal-Allard(D-Calif.) and Zoe Lofgren(D-Calif.) have asked Obama to pardons to DACA(Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients. Many of them fear that they could be deported from the US once Donald Trump assumes his office in January 2017.

DACA–Obama had launched the program for ‘Dreamers’ using his executive authority. DACA recipients having got US work permits(for a temporary period) fear that they will be under threat of deportation from the incoming US administration.

Dreamers facing stress and high risk of suicide–Dreamers are facing stress, fear and uncertainty and this is leading to psychological issues like anxiety, depression and increased suicide risk. This was stated by Lofgren, Gutierrez and Roybal-Allard in a letter addressed to the president. They want pardons to be issued to undocumented immigrants.

So, it’s a matter of life and death for such undocumented immigrants in the US. In fact, there is precedent for using pardons for those involved in non-criminal offenses, stated Lofgren during a recent press conference. So, it will be possible to do it on a large scale.

Although, it may not protect them from getting stripped of their US work permits/US Green Card, but, at least, it will offer protection to undocumented immigrants from the risk of deportation, Lofgren asserted.

They asked Obama to act as soon as possible. Only then can DACA recipients can heave a sigh of relief. After all, ‘these are kids, said Roybal-Allard. So, it’s our sense of responsibility towards them, Roybal-Allard added.

President-elect Trump will not be able to undo a presidential pardon if it is issued.
