The post-graduate work permit program in Canada proffers international students an opportunity to work for three years provided they have graduated from a Canadian university. In addition to the degree if they have one year’s work experience, they can be considered for permanent residency in Canada. International students have to pay higher fees than domestic students and their admission is more profitable to the educational institution.
Currently, the educational sector of Canada is facing two major impediments and they are:
1. Presenting phony prospects to international students that fail to qualify him/her under Canada’s immigration rules.
2. Foreigners entering Canada on student visas with no purpose of study.
Phony Promises
Several institutions that claim to have affiliations, programs and special faculty that are untrue; commit fraud. The credentials and credibility of the respective institution has to be scrutinized by the student before applying for the program. In all likelihood, it may be possible that the institute put up false information to qualify government standards or to appear well-established.
Niagara College in Ontario offers four-month long diploma courses. The institution claimed that if the student had a previous year of study in Canada and a bachelor’s degree from their home country along with the diploma, they could obtain work permits. The students, however, lost out because their course was considered distance learning because most of their courses were to be done online. The college therefore had a class action lawsuit filed against them.
Assumed Appellations
The word ‘college’ does not have much value in Canada. As a result of this, any building can be named as a college. Students should be careful and not choose an institute just because it has the word college on its nameplate.
Some institutions are also known to use the name or an identical name of an institution that is well-established and famous outside Canada. If the institute has not registered its name within Canada, anyone can register the name without any association and affiliation to the original institute. Foreign students must be careful not to choose the institution just because of its renowned and prominent name.
Pretend Pupils
Several foreigners have obtained Canadian study visas without the intention of studying. The Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has now proposed rules and regulations to address the issue of foreigners entering Canada with no intention of pursuing an education. This deprives deserving students of their chance at a better education.
Check Counterfeit Contrivances
Students always aim at premier sources of education and thus tend to lean towards well-established schools, colleges and universities. Educational institutions will use all means by hook or by crook in order to attract students to their programs. Immigrants should not misuse their student visas for self- indulgent interests.
International students must therefore be on the alert and should neither be deceptive nor become the victim of deception.
