US IMMIGRATION REFORM—A RIGHT STEP

This has been stated by Executive Vice-Chairman of Tech Mahindra, Vineet Nayyar.

US Immigration bill--Speaking about the proposal, Nayyar said any international company (in India-for example) need not restrict itself to employing only Indian employees.

So, the change is imminent, he further maintained. An immigration bill was passed by the US Senate in July that led to new norms for US H-1B visas and US L1 visas for foreign workers having high skill-sets wanting to work in the US.

The latest US immigration proposal is being welcomed as a step in the appropriate direction.

It may be worth notable that as per the views of Nasscom, the Indian IT industry body, the proposed US immigration bill is not likely to be approved in its current version. The bill is pending for approval after it is forwarded to the US House of Representatives.

Giving details about the US immigration bill awaiting approval, Nayyar stated that the proposal is likely to get watered down, but it’s not yet clear about the extent to which it may be done so. However, one thing is for sure, that Indian firms will have to give increased employment to the Indians, he affirmed.

Indian American docs want a say in US immigration reform—Meanwhile, Indian-American doctors have sought their say in the US immigration reform bill. That’s because they maintain that the US is facing a huge scarcity of physicians and the latest US immigration proposal is not considering this important issue.

As per the AAPI (American Association of Physicians of Indian-origin), every 7th patient in America is being treated by the Indian-American doctors.

So, their views cannot be ignored at any cost, the AAPI further affirmed. As per the president of AAPI, Dr. Jayesh Shah, seeing one out of every seven patients does require a seat at the US immigration reform table. After all, we do possess unique experience of dealing with patients and areas where availability of resources is not there.

Clear US Green Card backlogs—The AAPI also highlighted yet another vital issue. It was clearing the huge backlogs of US Green Cards. Speaking about issue, the co-chairman of the AAPI Legislative Committee, Dr. Sampat Shivangi said physicians must be included in the list of STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) for getting a priority in US Green Cards.

Foreign students who successfully graduate with STEM degrees get the eligibility for US Green Cards. And this allows high-skilled foreigners to stay in the US after pursuing higher US studies.

That’s exactly what physicians graduating from US residency program(accredited) must be allowed to help the US tackle the scarcity of physicians.
