Pacific needs to combat smuggling and trafficking.

In Pacific region, the cases of people smuggling and trafficking in human have been gaining ground these days.

The expert of New Zealand reflects his opinion that this matter can be effectively dealt with the collective effort of the governments of the Pacific area.

Api Fiso, Chief advisor of Department of Labour has said that this kind of trade phenomenon is more conspicuous in the areas that witness greater number of tourists as it helped the smugglers to maintain a low profile.

Along with New Zealand and Australia as regards these illicit trades, Pacific has mainly been serving as a transit point to other destinations like Canada and United States.

Fiso has asked for regional cooperation in order to deal with this problem and risk involve to it can be abated in effective manner only if the regional response is active.

Fiso holds the opinion that the agencies and non-governmental organizations of the respective areas should exchange data in order to track this ongoing smuggling and trafficking.

The reason behind the irregular migration in pacific region is employment and link with friends and families. Another prominent factor is coming of refugees from other areas to Asia-Pacific region.

Fiso mentioned that 2009 US report related to human trafficking gave the definition that a person would be considered trafficked if the person has been working as a prostitute and lesser than eighteen years of age. This definition has lifted a debate between US and New Zealand.

In New Zealand, the matter is being dealt by emphasizing on cooperation of immigration officials and Labour Department with police and related agencies probing into visa sector and sex industry.

In New Zealand, there is no case related to exploitation and trafficking in connection with sex industry.

Fiso said that there has been no such claim of smuggling people into the country as slave labour. But he has confirmed cases where immigration brokers have been exploiting people for their profit.
