Militants force girls to marry, then kill

Jammu — In yet another incident of its kind, a girl was abducted and forced to marry a militant, only to be raped and killed later, in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, an Indian Army spokesman said.

Giving details of the incident, the spokesperson said, “a terrorist named Javed Iqbal alis Jeshan, a commander of Hizbul Mujahedeen in Doda, had been pestering a young girl, Shama of Asiri in Doda district, a daughter of a Forest Range Officer, for the last two years to give in to his desire to marry her.”

The girl did not agree even as the militant kept threatening the family.

Later, the girl “was abducted by the terrorist”. Shama, 24, was then “raped for two months by Javed”.

The spokesperson said, “On Dec 2, the girl met a tragic end when Javed threw her down the cliff to divert the attention of security forces who had cordoned him”. The girl got killed and the militant escaped.

“A statement from the outfit later said that the girl was an active member of the tanzeem (organisation) to fight for jehad”, he said.

Such incidents of militants forcing girls to marry them are “not uncommon” in militancy-affected areas of Jammu and Kashmir though at times girls have also willingly married them. Those who refuse are abducted, tortured or killed.
