Real Madrid rout Kiev to bag first points

Hamburg — Real Madrid trashed Dynamo Kiev 5-1 in Champions League action to get their first points of this year’s campaign while last year’s runner-up Arsenal made it two wins out of two against Porto.

Raul and Ruud van Nistelrooy both scored twice for Real to overcome the Ukrainians in their Group E tie in Madrid Tuesday.

Kiev finished the game with 10 men when goalkeeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy was sent off for bringing down Van Nistelrooy in the box. The Dutchman got up to score the spot kick to make the score 5-1.

Despite the result, Real still lie three points adrift of group leaders Olympique Lyon who move on to six points after a 3-0 win away to Steaua Bucharest, who remain on three.

Lyon, who had beaten the Spanish giants in their opening match, went ahead two minutes before halftime through Fred when the Brazilian tapped in after Steaua goalkeeper Carlos spilled a long-range kick from Juninho.

Tiago made it 2-0 with a near-post header in the 55th minute while Karim Benzema completed the impressive win shortly before the final whistle.

Manchester United sit top of Group F with six points after a superb second-half strike from Louis Saha secured a 1-0 win away to Benfica.

“I think the result was very fair,” said United’s Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo after the game.

“First half Benfica played better but we controlled the second half.”

Scottish champions Celtic sit second on three points after beating FC Copenhagen by the same scoreline in Glasgow. Kenny Miller scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after Shunsuke Nakamura was fouled in the area.

The Danes sit third on one point, level with Benfica.

In Group G, Arsenal maintained their 100 percent start to the campaign with a 2-0 win at home to 2004 winners Porto.

Thierry Henry headed home Emmanuel Eboue’s cross seven minutes before the break to put the Gunners in front and set up Aleksandr Hleb in the 48th minute for the Belarus international to score the home side’s second.

Earlier, CSKA Moscow moved on to four points in Group G with a 1-0 win at home to struggling German side SV Hamburg.

The only goal of the game for the 2005 UEFA Cup winners was scored by Brazilian Dudu on the hour after being given a free header from a Carvalho corner.

The German club, who have not won any of their last 11 encounters looked as out of sorts as they have been doing in the Bundesliga and were further weakened four minutes from the end when striker Benjamin Lauth was controversially red carded.

AC Milan were held to a scoreless draw in Lille but remain top of Group H on four points, two clear of the French side. Anderlecht also sit on two points after playing out a 1-1 draw away to AEK Athens.
