COVID stalls hopes of studying in Canada; Students-universities still hopeful

COVID has taken lives and has derailed the economy. While the manufacturing sector is largely affected by the current situation, the academic sector is also bracing itself for an uncertain future. Aspiring students, however, are ready to wait. Anoushka Roy, a higher secondary student, wanted to study visual arts abroad, but is now worried about her exams in India, which have been cancelled because of the virus. “My plans are delayed, not cancelled. For the time being I will have to apply for colleges in India, which is not a bad idea either.”

Many may not be as optimistic like her. Ritika Sharma (name changed) had been accepted in multiple universities and was happy that she had multiple options in Canada and Italy. The loan process was almost complete till it was stalled for the lockdown. “Even if the lockdown is up, I missed the May deadline and will have to opt for September admissions. Having said that, I am not sure about the economic conditions in these countries either, which are preparing themselves for an unemployment explosion. “If I do not get a job opportunity there, I cannot pay my loans,” she further added.

Some fear losing money after having cracked the IELTS and TOEFL exams and then being stalled. If the situation does not bounce back in the next few years, the scores may be nullified. However, immigration experts are optimistic.

Aspiring students can get back on track within a year and by the time they graduate, the economy will be fully recovered in US and Europe. Some universities are also doing what best needs to be done in this time of crisis. While some are opting for online classes, others are still conducting interviews to continue with the immigration process.
