Canada’s merchant marine industry has been growing fast, and to deal with the increasing demand for skilled workers, the Seafarers’ Training Institute, in collaboration with the Seafarers International Union (SIU) of Canada, Groupe Desgangés and Algoma Central Corporation, and Canadian Steamship Lines (CSL) have taken a hiring initiative at the national level with the objective to recruit, train and retain youth in the industry.
The new initiative has been conceived to address the continuous labor shortage in the Canadian shipping industry, which is currently growing by leaps and bounds. The first of its kind plan has been conceptualized to fill the vacant positions, and avoid a crisis that may well be in the offing if the shortfall in labor is not covered with skilled workers.

The campaign is looking to attract not only Canadian youth but also experienced workers who are looking for well- paid employment opportunities in the Marine industry of Canada, a senior official of the organization and also one of the spokespersons of the campaign said. Encouraging youth to avail the fantastic opportunity, he said, he had joined seafarers at the age of 21 and earned more than $50,000 even though he had just passed high school.
Once employed, SIU’s Unlicensed Apprenticeship Program provides recruits with paid education, upgrading of skills and free boarding, besides stable employment.
There is an immediate need to employ at least 300 new workers, apart from regular annual recruitment to fill up posts that are left vacant by retired seafarers. SIU workers are recruited to work for companies Groupe Desgagnés, Algoma Central Corporation, and Canada Steamship Lines on vessels in East and West Coasts, and Great Lakes.
