Detained immigrants living in trash, forced to eat spoiled meat in US Immigrant detention centers

On November 2016, the federal inspectors conducted sudden facility check-in after which, shocking facts about the condition of the detained immigrants in the United States were revealed. As per a report by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office, around 528 immigrants who were detained at the Lacy Jail in Orange County, one of the US Immigrant detention centers underwent inhumane punishments like solitary confinement. They were also made to eat spoiled meat, use rotten showers and the vicious guards did not allow any sort of entertainment or recreation to them.

The detainees were not allowed to use telephones and they only could borrow one book from the library for a span of 30 days. The innocent souls were forced to stay together with hard-core criminals as a severe punishment condition for the immigrants. The standard of food items was absolutely unacceptable and there was no way of communicating with the family members or lawyers, whatsoever. The condition of the quarters where the detainees were made to stay was completely uninhabitable because of the dumped trash, dirt, etc.

Forced Labor, Solitary confinement if they refuse

As the Orange County Sheriff Department (OCSD) stated, the detainees had to wash the showers in order to free from mold and mildew but no adequate washing equipment was given to them by the inspectors. An exclusive lawsuit by the detainees in Colorado unveiled that they were made to resort to forced labor and pushed to solitary confinement if they disagreed. No documented reports of detainees’ grievances or the subsequent responses are being noted down or tracked by the ICE officials. Just a private contractor’s database maintained a track of the complaints although the same could not be accessed and attained to by the ICE officials.

The reports of the Inspector General received sheer indifference and neglect from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the 18-page government report took almost four months to get published. Appropriate actions for improvement of the condition of the detainees will take almost one year time in October 2017 until which, the detainees of the Theo County jail have to keep enduring the brutal conditions inside the confinement. The condition of the jail hasn’t got better since 2013 when similar scenario was reported.

Physical Abuse of Immigrant Detainees Very Common

After President Donald Trump’s executive orders were passed, the condition of the 200+ ICE houses throughout America has worsened. Every single jail had almost the same kind of complaints like physical abuse of the detainees by the guards without being given any chance to take the help of any medical facilities and combined efforts by the guards along with other jailed criminals to make situation even more heinous for the detained immigrants.

The ICE jails run on the basis of their self-made standards in terms of the food provided along with the state of living conditions as well. There is no parity with the methods or protocols of the US Department of Agriculture or any other similar statutory body and therefore, the systems remain unchecked and still continuing in the same manner. Of late, documents related to a request under Freedom of Information Act disclosed that hardly any such facility has been stopped.
