Plans of Quebec for immigration reforms were announced by Quebec immigration minister Kathleen Weil. She maintained that the government was all set to take the ambitious steps of immigration policy reform soon.

  1. Federal style expression of interest system--Named “Together, We Are Quebec”. Quebec immigration reform policy features a federal styled expression of interest system. It is the first reform of immigration system in the last 25 years, admitted Kathleen. Quebec will be adopting its version to be called as a Declaration of Intent.

2. Matching of Immigrants with Regional economic Profiles- In this, immigrants are going to be matched with the regional economic profiles. Quebec immigration system wants to increase economic immigration to nearly 70 percent of its annual quota.

3. Introduction of Programs for Students and Temporary foreign workers- The government of Quebec shall be allocating a budget of nearly $40 million over a period of five years. This will be meant to reduce processing delays of application to just around three months. In addition, it will also lead to creation of programs for foreign students and temporary workers get permanent residency.

Several earlier figures have revealed that foreigners having strong ties to Quebec possess a higher probability of successful economic settlement. The best part is that all these categories shall be eligible for getting free French online language courses too.

4. Recognition of foreign credentials, training overseas—Majority of Canada provinces, including Quebec, face obstacles in recognition of foreign credentials and training received overseas. However, Quebec government shall make sure that individuals not getting their credentials recognized shall not get invitation to apply for Quebec immigration.

5. Elimination of ‘first-come first-served’ approach–The new Quebec immigration process will be eliminating the ‘first-come first-served’ approach to immigration. It is currently applicable in Australia and New Zealand. Quebec has plans to allow nearly 10,000 skilled workers under its present immigration policy.
