Canada has announced new rules for spousal sponsorship, conjugal and common-law partner. These changes will be applicable to all Canada temporary and permanent immigration programs.

Who is eligible(minimum age) for Canada common-law sponsorship or spousal sponsorship?—Let us see the minimum age for Canada spousal or common law partner sponsorship.

Well, to begin with, for spousal or common law partner sponsorship, the minimum age is up from 16 to 18 years. All individuals wishing to apply for Canada immigration as a common law partner or as a spouse of a Canada citizen or Canada permanent resident need to be not less than 18 years as far as the eligibility conditions are concerned.

Change to offer increased protection to women–Aim of this latest change of minimum age to 18 years is to offer increased protection to girls and women from forced weddings. Females are considered vulnerable since they become victims of forced marriages. Hence, Canada immigration rules raised the minimum age to 18 years for Canada spousal sponsorship.

Exceptions to new Canada immigration changes

Internet, telephone or such other marriages—Internet, fax, telephone or such other marriages will not be adequate for getting spousal sponsorship. This will be applicable after the latest changes announced by Canada immigration department CIC(Citizenship and Immigration Canada).

Internet marriages are almost same as proxy marriages since both parties are not present physically in the marriage or wedding ceremony. The concerned individuals participate in the marriage ceremony by fax, Skype, internet or any other form of communication.

Hence, such marriages are named as excluded marriages under new rules.
