Ruby Dhalla’s former caregiver told the House of Commons committee that while she was working at the Dhalla household in 2008, she was mentally tortured and had to work overtime on a regular basis.
However, the Brampton-Springdale MP said that the caregiver from Filipina and another caregiver were treated with extreme care and love while they worked in the house, and hinted that there might be a conspiracy hidden in this, in order to spoil his image.
Magdalene Gordo said that she was forced to work until eleven in the night or midnight while she worked in the Dhalla house. She said while testifying the Commons immigration committee that she was tortured mentally and stressed physically on her job.
A second caregiver who was employed at the Dhalla house, Richelyn Tongson, told the committee that she worked in that house with fear of not being tagged as an illegal immigrant and sent back to Philippines. She broke down in front of the committee while she tried to explain how she supported her husband and four children with the salary she used to get as a caregiver.
The women also claimed to have received threat calls because of her coming forward with the accusation against the MP. The two women also allege that their documents were taken away from them and not returned.
Dhalla said that she was never the employer of these caregivers, and it was her brother who was the employer. She also said that as per her knowledge, both the caregivers were treated extremely well, and sometimes even her mother cooked food for the caregivers.
