According to a new report, the National Commission for the Control of Detention Centers and Reception Zones of France has criticized the government for practicing an immigration policy that is not accepted internationally.

According to the latest report that was published on Thursday, the government-sponsored agency condemned the treatment that is provided to the unaccompanied foreign minors that arrive in France. The international forums have already criticized the policies heavily. According to the commission, due to the establishment of various detention centers at the airports for minors, irrespective of age, the country’s policies has already faced a lot of disapproval from all international bodies that condemn this practice. The practices against the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, the commission said.

The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child that is based in Geneva said, that they were deeply concerned by the situation. The UN agency also expressed its concerns regarding the fact that these children are often sent back to their countries without any in-depth analysis of their situation as to what prompted the move. The firm reported that there are possibilities that after returning to their homeland, they might be exposed to the risk of becoming victims of exploitation.

According to the commission report, in 2006, more than five hundred minors were kept in a holding area for almost 3.5 days. After this 230 of them were sent back whereas 35 were granted entry into the country as asylum seekers. It is to be noted that the government has received 166 requests for asylum from unaccompanied minors in the year 2007. Whereas, in the year 2006, the government received 158 such requests.

Among these applications, 75percent were rejected that resulted in sending these children back to their country of origin, the commission said. According to the report, an immediate recommendation to the government is that decisions in case of asylum requests from these minors should be taken considering their betterment and this should be the only criterion for selection or rejection.

The main opposition Socialist Party (PS) has also criticized the migration policies followed by the current French Government and termed it as ‘contradictory’. According to the party’s national office, the migration policies are even more contradictory after the publication of the Mazeaud commission’s report that introduced quotas for foreigners who are willing to work in France.
