children bedrooms.jpg [1]Bedrooms and bathrooms should be a retreat where you can shut yourself away- temporarily- from family responsibilities and cares. Choose schemes which relax your mind.
Layout
Layout in bedrooms and bathrooms, which are often small, means you should allow enough activity space. The format should not be suffocating and should allow peace of mind to the utmost.
Paint
Paint needs to resist condensation in bathrooms, so use semi gloss latex. For bedrooms, a restful non reflective matt emulsion is a good choice, except for a child’s room where it is advised to opt for a finish that is easily washed. Children and teenagers usually like bright schemes, but adults prefer a more soothing choice of scheme. Consider peach, lemon, grey-green, silver grey or a deep enclosing shade like midnight blue or damask rose.
Wall coverings
You will need water resistant materials in the bathrooms. Vinyl wall coverings and ceramic tiles are good choices.
Flooring
Flooring need not be hard wearing but it must be water resistant for bathroom use. Choose between carpet made from synthetic fibres, vinyl tiles and cork, which must be vinyl coated or sealed to resist moisture.
Children’s bedrooms need floors which are easy to clean. Avoid the usage of carpets. As far as an adult’s bedroom is concerned, the carpet must well coordinate with the colour scheme.
Finishing touches
Window coverings- Window coverings vary with the room’s style. Blinds are practical in bathrooms. Long drapes look attractive in large bedrooms, but the small ones are appropriate for tiny rooms.
Mirrors- Mirrors are essential in both bedrooms and bathrooms, but use them decoratively to reflect the light. Make sure they are at the appropriate place and the right height.
Plants- Plants flourish in humid bathrooms and light bedrooms. Use hanging baskets to add interest to the dull corner or mass plants on shelves or small screens to adorn the room.
Furniture- Furniture can be decorative as well as comfortable. It should coordinate with the colour scheme.
Bed linen- Bed linen can coordinate with the curtains. For a child’s room, use pastels, florals or geometricals. Teenagers are happy with stripes, checks and bright colours. For an adult bedroom, chose from soft and relaxing shades.
Lighting- Lighting should be relaxing. Adequate bedside lighting and lights around mirrors for making up is essential.
