As per a report on Thursday, a Los Angeles-based American Apparel has been thinking over putting about 1500 of its employees out of work, because they are not authorized to work in the United States.
The report came along with the announcement of American Apparel on Thursday that a twenty percent year-over-year drop has been recorded by the company in retail sales for the month of August. According to the Los Angeles Times, the company has said that employees would be laid off on account of their immigration status. The paper said that it was determined by a federal inspection of employment records of American Apparel that some sixteen hundred of its employees were not authorized to work in the United States.
According to the paper, apart from those unauthorized workers, more than two hundred other employees were also found to have some trouble in their records.
An attorney for American Apparel, Peter Schey, said that there are some fifteen hundred employees in the company who are on the verge of being terminated by the end of September. Schey said that there is huge disappointment and disheartenment in the company because it has to layoff many workers who have contributed greatly to the success of the company.
According to the paper, all the workers who will face the heat of this decision are based at the manufacturing facility of the company in the downturn Los Angeles.
In a letter to its employees, founder of the company and its Chief Executive Officer Dov Charney expressed his sadness over the departure of the workers in an unusual manner.
