Reports said on Tuesday that refugee status was granted to South African citizen Brandon Huntley by Canada under the statement that the South African government is not capable of protecting him from persecution by “Africans South Africans”.
A representative of the High Commission of South Africa in Ottawa was quoted by a newspaper as saying that a note over the decision by Canada has been taken by South Africa. The representative, Anesh Maistry, said that Canada was a sovereign country whose laws are made by self.
The Ottawa Sun reported that clear and quite convincing evidence was provided to a Canadian immigration and refugee board by Huntley which proved the inability or unwillingness on part of the South African government to protect him.
A tribunal panel chair William Davis said that the evidence provided by Huntley showed a picture of unwillingness and indifference by the government of South Africa when it comes to protecting white South Africans form African South Africans persecution.
Davis said that he found that Huntley would be noticeable like a “sore thumb” in any part of South Africa as a result of his color.
Ronnie Mamoepa, Home Affairs spokesperson, said that the ruling has disgusted the government and described the same as a set of baseless allegations against South Africa and its people.
Mamoepa said that it would have been well-mannered by the government of Canada to allow the government of South Africa to answer the allegations and make things far more clear.
