British police have been called in order to help the hunt for the rapist who attacked a London journalism student in a makeshift camp for the immigrants in Calais this week.
Investigators said that the rapist might have crossed the Channel to Britain after the assault. They believe that the attacker could be a member of a people trafficking gang.
The French authorities have sent two photo-fit portraits of the suspect, who they believe is a man of Middle Eastern appearance in his 20s, to the police in Britain and in other European countries.
The deputy state prosecutor in the nearby Boulonge-sur-Mer Philippe Muller said that the woman was raped and brutally attacked. She has got very significant wounds near her mouth and also got scratch marks on her face.
Muller added that the victim had been staying in France in order to identify her attacker from amongst the dozens of immigrants detained by French police and immigration authorities. He said that the lady has shown a lot of courage to help with the investigation but added that she has suffered a lot and the only thing she wants now is to return home.
The Canadian woman, who is originally from Vancouver, came to Calais on Sunday in order to take photographs of immigrants in The Jungle.
Mr. Muller said that although local police had warned her against going into the dangerous camp alone at night but the student ignored the advice thinking that she had already been there twice or thrice, and it is just normal for her.
Mr. Muller said that she entered the isolated woods between 300 and 400 immigrants and was having a conversation with a group of them. Meanwhile, a man came out of the group and said that he had something to show her and he raped her after taking her into a cabin that was situated a few dozen meters away from the place, Muller added.
Detectives believe that the attacker must be a member of the gangs that charge money for smuggling migrants across the Chanel. The reason for them believing so is the fact that he was speaking good French and very few of the immigrants in The Jungle care to learn the language.
But unfortunately, Mr. Muller said, the person might have left the area either for another country or for another port I France.
