Obama has said that in the next few months he would call immigration leaders to start preparing a draft proposal for comprehensive immigration reform.

Obama said that he believes it is very important to get started with working on immigration reform now as it will take time to get passed. He said that he was very committed towards making the reform a reality and promised to do so as soon as possible.

The US President also said that it will be very tough to get new immigration laws passed as the economy of the US is in a very bad shape. He said that immigration laws were tough to pass even two-three years ago, so now it will be even tougher to get through.

Obama called on pro-immigrant organizations to come up with ideas regarding the ways to pass the reform through the Congress. However, he said, he will focus more on improving the system for legal immigration, before he would start concentrating on the immigration reform.

Ever since Obama took the office as he president of the US, and in the middle of the economic crisis, pro-immigrant advocates have been eagerly waiting to hear actual information from the White House regarding time when the administration will start moving in a positive direction on immigration reform. Obama said during his presidential election that he would address the issue of immigration reform during his first year in the office.
