It seems as if the recent attacks on students from India Down Under have had no effect on prospective immigrants from the country, as more than twenty thousand Indians have arrived in the country on permanent skilled visa category. They have left behind the Chinese who were about seven thousand fewer than Indians during 2008-09.

As per the official figures which were released yesterday, foreign workers who were sponsored by their employers in Australia went up to 33 percent of the skill stream during 2008-09, which was just 22 percent in the previous year and 17 percent in 2006-07.
The top three occupations in terms of successful applications taking into consideration all permanent skilled visa categories were accountancy at 6,238, computing professionals at 3,879, and nurses at 3,355. In terms of countries, the top three countries under the skilled stream were the UK, followed by India and China at number three.
Chris Evans, Australia’s Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, said that significant impacts have been observed as a result of changes which were introduced in January, which included the Critical Skills List (CSL) for occupations of high value and prioritizing migrants sponsored by state/territory or employers.
