Migraine Patients have Higher Sexual Desire

Migraine Patients have Higher Sexual Desire

Housten -- Headache is a very common cause to avoid sexual activity. But a new study had found out that all types of headaches do not make a person reluctant for sex; that is they have found out that sexual desire and migraine may be influenced by the same brain chemical.

The study done by researchers at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine led by Timothy Houle, studied 68 young adults from Chicago and examined the relationship between migraine headache and their self-reported sexual desire. Participants were interviewed to diagnose their headache type either migraine or tension and were made to fill a 14-item questionnaire to measure their sexual desire.
In the result, males were reported 24 percent higher levels of sexual desire than females. It was also found that the migraine sufferers reported 20 percent higher levels of sexual desire than those suffering from tension headaches.

"The study demonstrated that migraine patients in general may experience higher levels of sexual desire than others," said Houle. "They appeared to be aware of this, rating their sex drive as being higher than others their age and gender."

Sexual desire and migraine headache have been linked to levels of Serotonin which is a brain chemical that plays a very important role in depression.

Excess of serotonin may lead to decreased libido and migraine sufferers are reported to have low system levels of Serotonin.

Serotonin also plays a role in migraine attacks.

Migraine headache is a common condition which exists up to 17.6 percent in females and 5.7 percent in males. The American Migraine Study has estimated that 23 million people older than 12 years of age have severe migraine headaches.

"The results support the idea that migraine, as a syndrome, is associated with other common phenomena. Understanding of this link will help us to better understand the nature of migraine and perhaps lead to improved treatment.” Said Houle.

This study’s objective was to examine the relationship between migraine headache and self-reported sexual desire and there is an evidence of a complex relationship between sexual activity and headache.
