The French government now wants to expand the tough policies it has against immigration and asylum throughout the EU.
President Nicolas Sarkozy is campaigning consistently for a European pact on immigration and asylum and this he believes would result in harmonizing the country’s policy in both areas. What Sarhozy is urging the EU is to follow is a selective immigration policy? Sarkozy is also favoring expulsion of all the migrants who are not documented properly.
Early in June this year, in a speech to the Greek parliament Sarkozy said that his government does not want a closed Europe and there is no harm in the flow of people in and out but at the same time, it will not allow inflow of illegal immigrants. Sarkozy is aiming to expel the undocumented workers and he has set a target of sending 25000 of them back every year. Speaking on the numbers the human rights activists said that it would put the police under a lot of pressure.
Christophe Deltombe, president of the French humanitarian association Emmaus said that the policy to fulfill the numbers at all cost is not justified. He said that there are thousand of immigrants, who gel up with the French society perfectly and are useful for the economy and all of a sudden, they are living in fear due to the control order that has been issued. He also said that most of these people are not associated with any crime, so why these innocent people should be expelled from the country.
Thomas Ferenczi, a European correspondent of Le Monde said that the implementation of the current policy is violating the freedom all those people who have not committed any crime except for the fact that they have been living in France and Europe illegally for their livelihood.
