London :In an undercover BBC investigation, a network of people were exposed who were involved in allegedly providing forged passport or stolen identity papers to illegal immigrants of Indian origin, that constituted mostly of Punjabis.
This helped these Indians to secure jobs in Britain.
This network operates in North London suburb of Southhall that consists of large number of Punjabi Indians. The exploits hundreds of illegal Indian immigrants through cheap housing and illegal documents and provide them jobs that is not only poorly paid but is often dangerous as well.
The BBC report showed the facilitators collecting money for illegal services provided by them. They were also speaking in Punjabi and after taking money, were handing over documents like passports and the National Insurance card. According to the report, in just one square mile of Southhall, more than forty houses were identified that were occupied by illegal immigrants.
A team of BBC’s undercover reporters met a man named ‘Vicki’. They talked with him about immigration and he went open about the fake documents he could obtain, and he also proudly claimed of servicing customers in Sheffield, Bradford and Coventry. The reporters filmed every second of the interaction in which Vicky also said that he use to get people into the country on lorries, known as donkeys. He said that the whole trip always organized by his ‘men in Paris’ and he also explained how he could provide a fake passport that is capable of beating the security at the UK Airport.
Although the Indian illegal immigrants, known as ‘faujis’, find work in Southhall but the wages provided to them are far below the National Minimum Wage. The report specified this by citing the example of a ‘fauji’ who is been employed 12 hours a day for six days in a week at just about two pounds an hour.
