Shimla -- The Himachal Pradesh government wants the defence ministry to order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the mysterious death of an Indian Military Academy (IMA) cadet who belonged to the hill state.
Devender Kumar Sharma, 23, of Hathon Tanaina village, some 30 km from here, was found hanging in his room at the defence academy earlier this month. While the IMA officials maintain it was a case of suicide, his family alleges fellow cadets repeatedly tortured him.
Relatives and friends from the village met state Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh late Monday here. The chief minister assured them that the government would soon write to the defence ministry to order a CBI inquiry into the death.
"No suicide note was found on Sharma. His parents say he was continuously tortured and killed as he had briefly served as a recruit before qualifying for the IMA test. It is a clear case of deep rooted class discrimination," said H.N. Kashyap, a fellow villager.
