CMA Canada happy with the proposed changes

The Canadian government is being praised by the Certified Management Accountants of Canada (CMA Canada) for its proposed changes that would allow foreign students in Canada to remain here and acquire citizenship. They believe that this is going to boost up the Canadian labour productivity.

Earlier, in its recommendations to the Canada’s Competition Policy Review Panel and also in the pre-budget submissions this year, CMA Canada suggested the government to adopt measures that could retain foreign students who are trained in Canada with the help of enhancements to the current immigration policy. They believe that it is important to encourage gifted foreign graduates to stay in Canada and help the Canada economy’s growth from the investment they made in educations.

The CMA Canada president and CEO Steve Vieweg said that CMA Canada has been a firm believer of the fact that attracting and retaining talented foreign students is the key of improving Canada’s human capital and enhancing the productivity record of Canada. He said that these recent graduates are at the leading edge of innovation and they have the talent and intelligence that is required to help the growth of Canadian companies and help it compete in the global economy.

Under the Canada Experience Class, the new avenue immigration that is proposed by the federal government, foreign student graduates who have acquired Canadian work experience and also fulfill the new requirements, would get a temporary resident status at the time they are filing their application. Following this, they will get permanent resident status after their application is approved, without having to leave Canada.

Mr. Vieweg also said that many CMA provincial partners have introduced programs to help the immigrants in developing competencies, like the mastery of the English language, so that they can successfully finish the CMA designation. The most recent federal budget noted other recommendations by the CMA. This includes establishing a scholarship program that will attract world’s top students.

Richard Monk, CMA, C. Dir, Chair of the Certified Management Accountants of Canada said that it is absolutely useless and makes no sense to educate the best brains of the world only to leave Canada at the end and contribute to the economies of other countries. Therefore t is really necessary to develop programs that could not only attract these foreign students but also retain them so that they can benefit the Canadian economy.
