According to a new report published by the Canadian government, the Canadian student visa program is not strict enough to make sure that overseas students attend classes.
The internal government report states that there is no requirement for foreign students to actually attend classes in Canada in spite of the fact that they are here to study. The only thing that is required from the student’s part is intent to study in Canada, the report stated. This means that even if the students fail to attend university classes, their Canadian visas will not be canceled.
The report also drew comparisons with the immigration legislation in various other countries regarding overseas students. For example, the student visa scheme in the USA and Australia, include measures to examine the holders and make sure that they meet requirements of the visa or face deportation.
The report also mentions the UK and France as examples of countries with world-class student visa programs. The report said that other countries are more focused towards making sure that institutions adhere to strict guidelines on maintaining the integrity of international student programs.
Last month the Canadian Department of Immigration and Citizenship announced the details of the proposed Canadian Experience Class, which was aimed to help temporary foreign workers and foreign students graduate to get permanent residency visa in Canada.
The report said that international students and workers would be more likely to choose Canada if they knew that their time in Canada and contribution to the Canadian society would help in applying for permanent residency.
