Canadian Border agents pose “threat to asylum seekers” by leaking their personal details.
Foreign diplomats have reported that the agents on Canadian border are giving out personal updates to the officials of those countries from where a particular asylum seeker has fled.
Karel Hejc of Czech Embassy in Ottawa, who is the head of the consular and public matters, has reported that he has indeed received the information from the agents of Canada Border Service Agency. He said the piece of information mainly constituted the full name and date of birth of the people who claim for refugee status in Canada.
Regarding this prevailing trend, Hejc has remarked that this is not at all a healthy trend and should not take place. He emphasized the fact that Czech Republic is not letting its citizens face persecution, which gives no relevance of such information reaching him.
There are some information, though unreliable, that the same has happened with other embassies also, but no one is ready to speak on the issue. Immediately after receiving the documents, Hejc explained his concerns in the matter to the Canada Border Service Agency. He also asked them to prevent the same in future, he said. But still, the situation hasn’t improved, he added.
Following his concerns, on Thursday, he met with the Citizenship and Immigration Canada, along with other Czech embassy officials, in order to find a solution to the matter.
Hejc said that he is mainly worried because he feels that it is not only one embassy that gets this type of personal information from the officials of Canadian border. Although, Czech Republic is not a country that prosecutes people and according to an embassy official, they do not give this information to anyone but the fact is that not all countries and their embassy staff are not so gentle.
Immigration lawyer, Lorne Waldman said that border services are authorized to verify the identity of every person entering Canada but clear guidelines must be at place, which at present, aren’t.
Karen Shadd of Citizenship and Immigration Canada said that they would never inform the embassies about asylum seekers because those who are seeking asylum are face certain danger in their country. Thus, the information will never go out in any way. Shadd added that there are exceptions that when the asylum seeker requests to be in touch with its embassy people.
