Canada might not decrease the number of permanent residents’ intake

Immigration Minster Jason Kenney said on Wednesday that it can be expected that Canada would meet its goal to take up to 265,000 permanent residents in the year 2009, in spite of the rise in rate of unemployment.

Immigration Minster Jason Kenney said on Wednesday that it can be expected that Canada would meet its goal to take up to 265,000 permanent residents in the year 2009, in spite of the rise in rate of unemployment.

Kenney told during an interview that for the year 2009, the government is planning on maintaining the intake of permanent resident immigrants at an even level.

It is expected that Canada would intake between 240,000 and 265,000 permanent residents this year. Among these immigrants, around 156,000 would be in economic class, 71,000 in the family class and about 27,200 would be taken under the protection person class, which also includes refugees. A total of around 10,200 immigrants would be taken under humanitarian grounds.

Last year, 247,000 permanent residents were accepted by Canada.

However, due to job losses reaching historic level, it is expected that there would be a reduction in the number of temporary foreign workers coming to Canada. Thus, one should not be shocked if Canada makes considerable decrease in the intake of number of temporary foreign workers.

It should be noted that the economy of Canada lost 129,000 jobs in the month of January this year, which was the biggest monthly decline in three decades.
