Calais immigrants are under suspect for involvement in gang rape of British student.
After the suspected gang rape of London journalism student, police have started questioning the immigrants living in Calais makeshift refugee camps.
The woman, who is aged between 35-40 years, told the police that up to ten people were involved in the attack on her that happened on Tuesday in a notorious makeshift camp in the northern French port’s industrial zone, named ‘The Jungle’.
It is believed that she entered the area in order to try to speak to the immigrants for a photo-reportage of their illegal trafficking through ferries and Lorries into the UK.
A police spokesman said that the woman was a student from London who had traveled to France in order to highlight the problems around concealed immigration.
French riot police have been brought in to assist in rounding up more than 100 asylum seekers for questioning, and a forensics team has also been brought in to take the DNA samples from dozens of immigrants who are suspected to be involved in the incident.
La Voix du Nord, Calais’ local newspaper, reported that the woman, who is a French speaking Canadian national studying at a journalism school at London, had visited the area before this as well. It also reported that she was raped by only one person. It claimed that the person who raped her is an immigrant who can speak French and offered her a tour of the camp.
The paper stated that one of the aid workers named Dominique had already warned her that going into the jungle is not a good idea and although she had been there two to three times to get in with the refugees and gain their confidence, it hardly changes anything. It is really dangerous to go into the woods and more so, after the dark, he warned.
At present, the victim is been treated at a clinic in Calais and she might be required to remain in France until the investigation gets over.
‘The Jungle’ is a part of a neglected area in the industrial zone called The Dunes, which is at a short walk from the ferry port. The would-be immigrants make tents out of plastic sheets and build fires over there.
They get the support of local charities, with the newly elected Right Wing council in Calais not providing them with permanent accommodation.
Although most of these would-be immigrants claim to be from Iraq, Afghanistan or Middle East, police officials believe that many of them are from Eastern Europe and the Balkans.
