Australian skilled migration reflects higher degree of success than Canada.
Canadian Immigration has reported that a research from the University of Melbourne found that due to the changes made in the Australian immigration policy, the country’s immigration program has been benefited immensely and it has become more effective and efficient.
The research and found that the Canadian immigration system has been unable to seek the desired results and it has failed in its attempt to get right immigrants for the right jobs.
It is to be noted that Australia changed its immigration policy at the end of the last decade. Under the new immigration policy, only those immigrants applying for skilled migration visas are approved whose skills are on the ‘high in demand’ list. The purpose of the change was to allow the government to efficiently fill skill shortages that are most in need, so that the immigrants in the country will be employed soon and contribute positively to the Australian economy.
Associate Dean at the University of Melbourne Lesleyanne, conducted the comparative research on two different countries. By the end of the last century, Australia as well as Canada had a near similar result for the success of their immigration programs. But after the changes that were introduced in the Australian immigration system, Ms. Hawthorne observed that economic migrants have performed far better in Australia than they have performed in Canada.
The research also found that during the period between 1995 and 2001, the percentage of migrants who found work in Australia within the first six months after their arrival, increased from 57 percent in 1995 to 81 percent in 2001. And the same research found that in Canada the percentage slipped from 64 percent in 1995 to 60 percent in 2001.
Ms. Hawthorne said that in contrast to Canada, Australia has been using research evidence to exclude applicants of economic category who are at risk of poor employment outcomes at point of entry. They are doing so by considerably expanding the pre-migration English language testing and mandatory credential assessment, and also awarding bonus points for occupations that high on demand, she said.
At present, Australia and New Zealand are campaigning heavily for skilled migrants from India and the UK in order to fill the shortages in their workforce. In particular, the Australians are desperate to get foreign workers to come to Australia in regional areas so that construction, mining and farming industries can reach their full economic potential.
