Another province joins the government’s effort to assist foreign workers

Minister of Human Resources and Social development Monte Solberg and the Saskatchewan Minister of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Rob Norris, announced that the Government of Canada is working with the Saskatchewan Government on various fronts to make improvements to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

Minister Solberg said that the government is helping the employers to deal with the shortages in skilled labour and making sure that Canadian consumers continue to be benefited by the temporary foreign workers program. He said that their association with the Saskatchewan government will make sure that foreign workers avail the same rights and protections as do the Canadian workers.

Minister Norris said that currently, Saskatchewan is one of the fastest growing economies of the nation and in order to make sure that they have the necessary workforce to build on that momentum, they need to take an aggressive approach towards immigration and they are doing just that. Norris added that with the help of the changes that are been announced, the problem in the skills shortages in the hospitality sector will be efficiently tackled and it will also ensure the well being and protection of the temporary foreign workers who play an important role in all the sectors. We are pleased to work along with the federal government in order to meet the growing labour market needs of Saskatchewan, Norris said.

Ensuring greater protection for the temporary foreign workers and improving the outreach and communication between the employers and temporary foreign workers are the key features of the improvements to the federal Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

Minister Solberg said that he is very pleased with the fact that both the governments are developing fresh and improved publications in a number of languages, few of them are even available at the Local Service Canada Centres and online as well. According to Minister Solberg, the governments are also introducing outreach activities that will make the workers aware of their rights and the employers aware of their responsibilities when they are hiring a foreign worker.

Saskatchewan is the fourth province that joins the efforts by the federal government to assist information sharing on important labour issues. Manitoba, British Columbia and Alberta have already joined similar negotiations with the government.

The government of Saskatchewan has already initiated a project under the Saskatchewan Immigrants Nominee Program (SINP) that will enable the temporary foreign workers to apply for a nomination in the hospitality sector.
