The Chandigarh Zonal Unit of Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) made a major breakthrough when its sleuths arrested an Amritsar resident from the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT), Sector 17, late last night and seized 10 kg of heroin from his possession.
Giving details of the seizure, sources in the NCB said officers in the NCB deputed sleuths at the ISBT on Tuesday night after a tip-off. The bureau had information that Gurmukh Singh of Amritsar was on a bus from Amritsar to the city and would disembark at the terminus around 12 o’clock.
The sources added that around 1 am, the sleuths spotted a person and after his search seized 10 kg of heroin. The accused had concealed the contraband in his luggage.
The preliminary investigations revealed that the contraband was sourced from Pakistan or Afghanistan having typical stamp markings like 7777, 888, aeroplane, triangle, lion, eagle.
A case under Sections 8, 21 and 60 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 has been registered against the accused and further investigations are on.
The NCB had earlier seized 26 kg of heroin along with a Chinese pistol from the border area of Amritsar district in December, 2005 and arrested two persons.
A spokesperson for the NCB stated that the Chandigarh Zonal Unit in coordination with the state police had organised 12 drug law enforcement training courses at various places in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
