US President Barack Obama has promised a comprehensive US immigration reform in later part of this year with his view to act out a legislation in 2010 that would provide millions of immigrants in the US a pathway to citizenship.
On Monday, President Obama said in Guadalajara, Mexico, that no one can deny the fact that US has a broken immigration system.
Though citizens of Mexico comprise of almost sixty percent of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the US, Indians are also growing at a rapid pace. According to a report by the US Department of Homeland Security, about 270,000 unauthorized Indians are living in the US, which is a 125 percent increase since 2000.
The report said that in spite of the fact that Indian immigrants are lesser in number in comparison to Mexicans; Indians cannot be overlooked as most of them are high-skilled workers. Illegal immigrants from rest all countries are generally low-skilled.
Obama dismissed the idea that next years’ mid-term elections would play any role in immigration reform and said that he believes immigration is in interest of the United States over a long period and there is no scope for short term calculations based on political environment.
Obama said that carrying on in the current manner means pressure in Mexico, danger for people trying to come illegally to the US, unfair treatment with people willing to come legally to the country, exploitation of migrants by immoral agents and employers, US wages depression and many other unfavorable consequences.
The present scenario is unfair and not right, and therefore, it will be changed, Obama said. However, he said that it is extremely important to arrange these massive initiatives in such a manner that they don’t just end up crashing into one another.
