Rating: 3 stars
Plot: Shrek is summoned to take over Far, Far way kingdom’s crown but his disinterest leads him to fetch Arie, the next legal heir and put things right.
Verdict: Mildly entertaining and funny film that is not as good as it could have been.
Box office prospects: The popularity of the green ogre will definitely fetch it a fair share of the box office grossing.
When the friendly Ogre first appeared on the screens in 2001 people just instantly fell in love with him. His team up with the donkey caught the popular waves and they created mass hysteria again, with Shrek 2 in 2004. the fact of the matter being, Shrek series is perhaps one of the most popular animations name in world cinema. Shrek the third, is a third installment and supposed to be bigger and better.
The story kicks off the king Harold falling ill and the burdens being forwarded to Shrek. But since Shrek has no intentions of living his swamp, he decides to fetch Artie, Princess Fiona younger rebellious brothers to be here on the crown. Prince charming has his own plan of taking over the kingdom and all chaos is let to loose.
Shrek 2 introduced new characters like Puss in Bots and Ginger bread man to help expand the plot and Shrek the third does the same. With Artie the wizard Marlin, prince charming and the baby Ogre a part of film, there are plenty of characters to look up to, but instead of ushering in serious plot developments, the abundance of characters actually made the film look crowded.
Quite frankly, the film feels over laden with creativity. It’s a if the think tank tried to stuff in too much of magic. In fact the storyline deviates and swerves so much thanks to the characters, it does become a little hard to grasp. Traditionally, family films are supposed to entertain you with simplicity and Shrek the Third does lose some ground.
The chemistry amongst the characters does not click at all. Where Shrek, the donkey and Puss in the Boots stole the show in the earlier films, there are a meager shadow of their past brilliance. The comedy is plausible but it did not have the same spark. On the whole, the film seems to be more of a kid’s film with silly fun instead of the smart and slick humor of the first two.
Then again Shrek the third is a new film and it does not have the same director as Shrek and Shrek 2. Perhaps, that explains the lack of comic timing and smart and slick humor. Shrek the third was supposed to be the biggest of lot but sadly it turned out the worst. Nevertheless the film is funny with a lot of action and can be well classified as a decent summer time film.
