Following the footsteps of two hugely successful films is not an easy job. Franchise filmmaking is one of the hottest and most happening trends in Hollywood and this summer has been full of sequels. Pirates of the Caribbean: At the worlds end. Was perhaps the most awaited film of this season after Spider Man 3, and like the latter found out, critics can be merciless.
POTC 3 is also a flawed film, but to its credit , it entertains you to its maximum. The film’s story picks up where Dead Man Chest’s left off, as Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann and Jack sparrow’s crew team up with captain Barbossa to fetch Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones’ locker.
For starters, the film begins with a slow and dark mood and quickly shifts gears to gain a frantic pace. This theme is basically dominant in the whole film with screen speed altering at frequent intervals. POTC 3 has an abundance of well timed action sequences and at no point do you feel restless. There are more number of pirates in this film and more locations as well.
Naturally, because of the increased characters and locations, the film’s narrative stretches a lot. But what one has to acknowledge is that although the film feels stretched, the story doesn’t. the plot thickens with every passing minute and one surely needs sufficient enough time to unravel all that has been built up in an hour.
A significant difference between the first two films of the Pirates’ series and At worlds’ end is that the latter focuses less on Jack Sparrow. Where Johnny Depp’s character carried the first two films solely on his shoulders, the secondary characters have been given a lot of importance this time around. And one can confidently say that the captain Sparrow’s dexterity and magic was definitely under utilized in the film.
Geoffrey Rush, Johnny Depp and Matt Hollander are par excellence but Orlando bloom and Keira Knightley definitely show some room for improvement the special effects are stellar and all in all the film is definitely worth its weight when it comes to making you laugh.
Given that Gore Verbinski, the director was perhaps planning for the fourth installment of the series, one can ignore some of the film’s scenes that just did not fit in, like Will Turner and Keira Knightley’s eloping action sequence. At the end of the day, Pirates of the Caribbean: At the World’s End is a good film but not as good as its predecessors.
