With the arrest of a small-time gangster from Mumbai, Delhi Police today claimed to have solved the case of a threatening e-mail sent to industrialist Sunjay Kapur, estranged husband of Bollywood actor Karishma Kapoor.
Raj Kumar Wazirchand Vazirani alias Raju (40), who was picked up from Mulund in suburban Mumbai last evening, had allegedly sent the e-mail to Kapur on Friday last threatening to kill him if he did not pay Rs 50 crore within a fornight.
In the e-mail, which he sent under the name Sameer Kulkarni, Raju had said he was writing on behalf of underworld don Ravi Pujari, associated with Chotta Rajan till recently.
"We are interrogating him to ascertain whether he had any connection with Pujari," Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh told reporters today.
Raju was brought to Delhi where a local court remanded him to police custody till September six.
He had been arrested several times earlier for alleged extortion and impersonation and had no connection with Karishma, engaged in a legal battle with Sunjay over the custody of their five-month-old daughter Samaira.
The JCP said a Delhi Police team tracked down the computer from which the e-mail was sent using a 'rediffmail.Com' account to a cybercafe in Mulund.
The owner and witnesses at the cybercafe revealed that the machine had been used by Raju during the time when the e-mail was sent. This was also confirmed by the cybercafe's register, Singh said.
