FASHION AS A CAREER!!!!! Take some advice from someone who was a fashion student not too long ago.
FASHION……..Sure sounds Glamorous, Hip ‘n’ Happening. But there is a lot more to the industry than just the pretty exteriors.
For those looking for a job that keeps you forever on your toes, and keeps your mind working every waking minuet, this is definitely the line for you.
Be it Fashion designing, production, merchandising, modeling, choreography or event co ordination every aspect of the fashion industry is truly abuzz all the time. And like every career path this too has it’s up and down sides.
Looking on the bright side, its one of the few industries that gives you tremendous exposure, in both work related spheres as well as social interaction. It’s also a field in which you learn to be extremely resilient and perseverant. One thing it definitely is not is a “Cake Walk” contrary to what most people think of it.
Being in an industry that thrives in the fast lane, its one in which you’ve got to be versatile and ever evolving. Your style of working or designing must be constantly updated to match the newest trends on the circuit.
[inline:1]Going back a few years to about a decade ago, it was common place for people of different fields to venture into the fashion world and make a mark. That phenomenon is one that’s rarely seen today. With the numerous fashion institutes and training establishments it has now become a fore runner on the academic scene as well. Studying fashion attracts scores of young creative minds.
Having been one of those young minds not too long ago, I do have a little advice for students looking forward to this career.
- Think hard and well before you choose this field. It is not just all about the glamour on TV.
- Once you’ve made up your mind concentrate of finding the best institute “Within your means”. Some fashion schools make you pay for the brand name on your certificate rather than the course your put through.
- Work on your basics, Art , Design, Color and Sewing comprise your basics for designers……and so on for all other spheres in the fashion industry.
- Be prepared to work harder than you ever saw yourself capable of.
- Learn to live under pressure. You may think submitting assignments on time with impossible deadlines is something your sadistic faculty loves putting you through. Wait till you get to the real world to know what sadistic is all about.
- And last but by far the most important…be resilient….believe in your self and your talent or develop one that you lack. No matter what people have to say this is one field where every sort of creative work can find its niche.
So having said all that, I have just one more thing to say………Go for it guys…….the Sky’s your limit here. It all depends on how high you aim and how hard you push yourself and those obstacles.
