Victoria, Australia, February 22: Victoria happens to be the most favored place for immigration by the Indians, the figures for the year 2008-09 by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship reveal.
Not just Indians, Victoria is the preferred destination for immigrants coming from Sri Lankans and Malaysians as well.
Meanwhile, migrants from countries like China, Iraq, Korea and Philippines prefer NSW and Sydney and the British and the South African people head straightway for Western Australia. Immigrants hailing from New Zealand prefer Queensland.
The choice for the preferred destination is different for migrants from Asian countries as compared with those from white English-speaking nations. And in choosing their favorite destination, migrants follow ethnic choices.
India has been a major source of immigration to Victoria for the sixth year consecutively while Victoria has continued to be the hot favorite destination for Indian migrants. Currently, Victoria has nearly 6191 permanently settled Indians who live and work in Australia apart from tens of thousands of Indians including students and temporary workers.
Meanwhile, it is yet to be ascertained how and to what extent the recent attacks on Indians in Australia, especially in Melbourne and Sydney, will affect the prospective immigrants’ interest in Australia and its consequential effect on the economy of Australia.
Apart from Indian migrants, Victoria has nearly 5919 permanent settlers hailing from China, which happens to be the second greatest
source of immigration to Australia. Chinese migrants also opt for NSW as their second favorite destination. At present, NSW (New South Wales) has nearly 5547 Indian migrants and 6744 Chinese migrants.
India replaced China as the major source of overseas students in the year 2009 when there were 76417 Chinese students studying in universities while there were 91,440 Indians studying vocational courses in Australia.
The British migrants, however, prefer Western Australia (WA) for immigration. The city has nearly 6212 British people settled permanently.
On the other hand, British people on temporary work visas to Australia prefer Sydney as their first choice.
Not just for Britons, WA is the preferred destination for migrants from Singapore, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Migrants from Pacific Islands and Japan go for Queensland as their top choice for Australian immigration.
