US immigration reform likely to benefit millions of immigrants

United States, December 18: The latest immigration reform by the US government is expected to prove beneficial for millions. The US immigration bill comprising of 700 pages has been presented in Congress and is likely to become the subject of discussion.

Illinois Democrat Luis V. Gutierrez introduced the Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) for America’s Security and Prosperity Act of 2009 (ASAP). In presenting the bill, members of the Black Caucus, Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Progressive Caucus and Asian Pacific American Caucus joined Gutierrez.
The bill was dismissed instantly by the Republicans and some conservative Democrats.
It is being considered as highly favorable towards immigrants. The bill, it is being argued, provides a quick and generous unification of the families. It is the result of the several months of collaboration with members of Congress, civil rights advocates and labor organizations.
Gutierrez said that the people have waited for a sufficiently long time to figure out a practical solution to the immigration crisis by the President of US and the Congress. And the time for waiting is, certainly, over now.
The bill is, undoubtedly, an answer to many years of pain and agony borne by the mothers who remained separated from their children, the exploitation of the workers and the undetermined security at the US border, asserted Gutierrez.
It is, inevitably, a well-deserved solution to a broken immigration system that makes the immigrants something to be proud of.
As per the proposal put forward by Gutierrez to the U.S. House of Representatives, the undocumented immigrants will need to register with the US government, pay $500 as a fine for every adult, clear background checks, learn English and fulfill a few other conditions. Once done, the immigrants will become eligible for a visa of six-years, and a green card thereafter.
If the proposed bill gets a nod in the house, nearly 12 million illegal immigrants will heave a sigh of relief as it will provide them a legal status in the US.
