UK visa rules to affect Indian students

United Kingdom, 8th February: Indians wanting to move to the UK for studying there might be in for a bad surprise.

According to the latest plans of the UK government, the UK visas are likely to be abolished for Indians as well as other non-EU students who intend to work in the UK on successful completion of their study courses in the UK. And this is going to give a big blow to the aspiring Indians wanting to get MBA degrees from the UK.

The aim of such intended UK visa curbs of overseas students is to control abuse of UK visas by foreigners whose intention is to use the route of such visas for getting employment in the UK.

As of now, all such students coming to the UK on UK student visas are permitted to undertake employment in the UK for a maximum period of two years on successful completion of their degree courses.

Every year, thousands of students hailing from non-EU nations including China and India come to the UK for pursuing management studies there.

Around 56,000 UK student visas were issued to international students hailing from India and around 45 percent of such visas were availed for pursuing MBA in the UK.

Latest figures revealed by 2010 European Geographic Trend Report maintained that out of the total GMAT score reports received by the UK in the year 2010, nearly one third belong to students from India and China. The planned changes in the UK student visa rules will result in a noticeable fall in the number of enrolments for MBA courses from India.

As per the findings of the study by ‘Association of MBAs’, an industry body based in London, majority of UK schools agree to the fact that such strict UK student visa norms will be a big threat to the enrolments in the MBA degree courses in the UK.

Foreign students coming to the UK every year to pursue MBA degree in the UK bring in a high income level for the UK universities and provide stability to such universities who are already cash-stripped.

On an average, the total tuition fee for MBA in the UK ranges anything between £10,000 and £50,000. Director of PG programs at Westminster Business School, UK, Jon Pike said that such rules will stifle number of foreigners seeking admission in the MBA in the UK.
