U Visa: A huge support for crime victims in USA

U Visa provides support to the undocumented immigrants who are crime victims for a minimum of four years by allowing them to work and stay here legally.

The significance of U Visa
This Visa allows the victims of crime, sex trade and violence to be a part of US legally and allows them to live, raise their children and work gracefully across US, who are otherwise undocumented immigrants. In some cases these entities are also given Green Cards when they meet a series of eligibility criteria.

The capping of numbers
U Visa Program provides benefit to as many as 10,000 undocumented immigrants every year as per the capping done.
The program was started in 2000 and the yearly limit was set the same year.

The upper limit of this program has already by filled and since 2013, CIC has rejected more than 13,000 applications submitted by such victims or their families on their behalf.

People who can apply
Someone who is a victim of any kind of crime like kidnapping torturing or any kind of violence can apply for this program. Family members including spouse, children sisters (if unmarried), and brother who has not crossed the age of 18, parents and or step or adoptive parents can apply for this program.

The advantages of the program
When the petition for U Visa is accepted, it automatically allows the victim to work in US. He or she would be given an Employment Authorization Document which when showed to an employer would help obtaining Social Security Number and hence would become eligible to get a job.

The application to be filled up

One has to fill up Form I-918 and submit the same along with meeting a series of criteria. The suffering should be substantial which could be either mental or physical and could be anything like assault, abuse, prostitution, exploitation, slave trade any Andy such act which has caused pain to the undocumented immigrant.

While filing a petition one must provide information that would help the investigation process and get deep to the root of the crime conducted. Only those crimes would be considered which happened on the soil of US.

The rising number of applications
Officials at Immigration Department inform that there is an increase in the number of apparitions coming to the department.

Oakland Police processed more than 500 applications in 2012 which was only three long back ago in 2007.

However, Police Chief Michael of Beaver Meadows informs that federal immigration officials are selective while taking a case into custody.

There are a large number of undocumented immigrants who have to face atrocities of various kinds and various corners. To protect their rights and let them live lawfully, the Government in US has initiated the U Visa program. To avail this facility a victim has to submit the right form and also needs to provide evidence of crime. Once awarded this visa, he or she can stay and work in UC for a maximum of four years and can also think of getting a Green card.
