Travel tips for safety abroad

Canada, January 24: Are you a woman planning to travel abroad alone? Follow these safety steps given by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada.

Even before your begin your journey, make sure to carry a Canadian passport which is valid along with Canada visa and the visas required for every nation you wish to visit. Take time to go through the various terms and conditions mentioned in the visas of different nations so that you may not get caught by the immigration officials for breaching conditions of any country.

While getting ready with your travel, be sure to carry lightweight handbag and keep only those things in it that can be easily replaced, in case they get lost or stolen. However, be careful to pack all your indispensable documents and other necessities for your travel like your passport, cash, traveller’s cheques, your airline ticket, debit and credit cards, a copy of your insurance policy, your contact information, medical prescriptions and the address of (nearest)Canadian embassy.

You must keep Photostat copies of all the important travel documents in your bag or suitcase so that if the originals are lost, these copies can be used. Also, you must keep a couple of copies of original documents relevant for your travel abroad with your family or your friend living in Canada.

In addition, always keep a small torch or flashlight in your bag to be used in case of power failure abroad.

When travelling alone for an overseas trip, you must keep in regular contact with your family or your friends in your home. This can be done either by using mobile phone, e-mail, fax or may be, by letter. But the thing is keep your family members updated about your wellbeing and your plans about your destinations.

Once you are in the foreign land and have checked into a hotel for staying, it is advisable to always keep the address of the hotel whenever you move out of the hotel. This is important because in case you get lost, you can use this address or the card of the hotel to locate and get back safely.

If you are going out alone on a tour or sightseeing, keep a note about the details of your destination for the day so that if you are in any difficulty, the hotel authorities can locate you and help for your safe return to the hotel. And never eat or drink anything offered by strangers because these might contain drugs.

Carry a portable small security alarm for personal use to ward off any miscreant abroad.
