In Calgary and around Alberta, standards or conditions of employment are reflected in the code of standards on employment and regulation. Almost all employers and employees must act in accordance with these regulations. Your employer has reached an agreement with you and the Government in order to provide you with a job.

Your employer cannot deduct these costs from your paycheck, even when they obtain written permission from you.
When and how do I get paid for my work?
Employers must have regular periods of payments every week, every two weeks or every month. All the employees must receive their wages within 10 days after such pay period ended. You may pay by cash, check or money order, or direct deposit to your bank account.
Deductions from revenue
This code allows certain deductions from your salary as payment of income taxes, Canada Pension Plan and Employment Insurance. If an employer wants to make other deductions, they would have to first give written permission. There are some deductions that are not allowed, even with written permission of their employer’s part. They cannot make deductions for mistakes. Neither can take deductions for missing cash or loss of property if more than one person has access to cash or property.
• Your workday cannot exceed 12 hours.
• You are entitled to at least 30 minutes of rest during each work period of more than five hours.
• You must receive at least one day of rest for each week of work.
Overtime Work and Pay the same
In most industries, working overtime hours worked up to eight hours after a day or more than 44 hours per week. If you are paid weekly, monthly or annual salary, shall also be entitled to the benefits of overtime for the hours of extra work it has worked. The overtime is paid to either the rate of at least 1.5 times
Your regular pay, or you and your employer can agree to replace the payment of overtime with time off from regular work (i.e. day off work) and general holidays.
