Significant increase in number of Australian visa rejections

Australia, 26th October: There has been a noteworthy increase in the number of Australian visa rejections in the recent times due to heightened security concerns.

The official figures released by ASIO (Australian Security and Intelligence Organization) in its annual report state that around 19 Australian visa applications had been rejected last year.

Out of these, five Australian visa applications were refused as part of counter-espionage measures while fourteen were refused on counter-terrorism grounds. Also, a total of eight Australian passports had been cancelled in 2009.

The annual report reveals that there has been an increase in the number of identified Australians wanting to move overseas for terrorist motives.

Giving details about the whole issue, David Irvine, director-general of ASIO, said that there seems to be a high risk of terrorism threat to the nation and is directed towards the Australians. Its almost the same as it has been after the September 11 attacks, added Mr. Irvine.

Hence, the ASIO along with its partners is investigating into hundreds of issues of counter-terrorism, Mr. Irvine added.

Mr. Irvine said that experience in several nations including Australia has shown that the governments require thoroughly integrated approaches between different agencies to curb the growth of terrorism.

There is a need for constant examination of methods to ensure that any gaps are filled and risk of terrorism is reduced to the minimum.

The failed attack in late 2009 on Northwest Airlines Flight 253, a US airliner, has highlighted the need for increased cooperation between various intelligence agencies.

He added that the government agencies must work together and share important information to thwart terrorist attacks. Mr. Irvine also pointed towards the important role of police support, Office of National Assessments and Defense Intelligence, the Department of Foreign Affairs and tip-offs from community.

In a move to counter terrorism in Australia, Australian PM (Prime Minister) Julia Gillard announced launch of CTCC (Counter-Terrorism Control Center) in Canberra.

Speaking of the new terrorism control centre, Gillard said that the nation asks all to extend your best efforts for protecting Australians.

Professor Clive Williams from Macquarie University’s Centre for Policing Intelligence and Counter-terrorism said that Australia is at a risk of terrorism although the nature of risk has changed. He also highlighted on the need for collaborations between government agencies to curb the risk of home-grown terrorism.
