Significant drop in New Zealand immigration
by Florence Gibbs - December 29, 2010
New Zealand, 29th December: As per the latest figures revealed, there has been a considerable drop in the number of immigrants coming to New Zealand.

And it is expected that the New Zealand immigration figures are going to fall even further in the coming year.
Meanwhile, the number of people moving out of New Zealand to other nations has shown a noticeable rise.
As per the data made available by Statistics New Zealand, there has been a net increase of 1,400 long term as well as permanent migrants and figures came to be 600 when seasonally adjusted in the month of November this year.
Long-term and permanent migrants are those who wish to live in New Zealand for a minimum period of one year.
There has been a net increase of 11,500 in the figures of New Zealand immigration and this is quite close to the annual increase in the New Zealand immigration figures of 11,900 over the period of last 20 years.
According to Jane Turner, an economist with ASB, the fall in New Zealand immigration numbers could be attributed to the rising trend of migrants moving to Australia from New Zealand. This is largely due to better conditions of job opportunities in Australia compared to employment scenario in New Zealand.
And the figures are likely to increase in the near future, expects Turner.
Turner feels that the growing trend of New Zealanders moving to Australia will decrease the inflow of immigrants to New Zealand to nearly 5,000 or 6,000 from the figures of 12,000 annually.
The migration of New Zealandars to Australia and the slowing down of immigration levels to New Zealand is going to affect the economy of New Zealand badly, and the most affected will be housing sector and the retail demand in the nation.
The largest number of people immigrating to New Zealand has been from India and the UK with each contributing 6,300 and 4,500 people.
And the number of people moving to Australia from New Zealand has shown an increase of 600 over the year 2009 taking the total departures to 20,100. Nonetheless, the net loss of migrants to Australia from New Zealand is still down in the year to November 2008 which was 35,000.
