United States, February 22: According to a latest United Nations Human Development Report (HDR) 2009, immigration has positive effects on the economy of destination nations.
The report has dispelled the common myth that immigration of foreigners is bad for the economic development of the countries.
It is a sheer wrong perception, says the report, that migrant workers fill vacant jobs and cause a reduction in the wages of local workers.
Among several other myths associated with the influx of foreign workers include increased burden on social and public services as well as cultural collaboration of the nation’s people. But, the HDR 2009 stated that such problems are actually exaggerated.
The report added that another myth which was found baseless or insignificant was that immigration had bad effects on native born
workforce having same skills. And there is no truth in the commonly held belief that migration stems from poor living conditions.
The UN report said that the governments behave in a more ambivalent manner towards low skilled workers despite the fact that contribution of migrant workers in several foreign countries is noteworthy. These workers comprise of a large number of the workforce employed in several industries like manufacturing, construction and service.
Apart from these industries, migrant workforce plays a vital role in providing childcare services in a large number of foreign countries.
As far as integration of these immigrants with the culture of foreign countries is concerned, it has been established well by the UN report that after acquiring relevant local language and related skills, these immigrants gel well with the social and cultural setup of the countries quite easily.

But, even after so many positive effects of immigration to any nation, different governments have been engaged in shutting doors of entry for a large number of temporary and seasonal workers in their country.
The annual report has been titled ‘overcoming barriers’ and addresses issued of human mobility and growth.
