Number of employment insurance beneficiaries declining in Canada


Canada, 25th March: The number of those receiving Employment Insurance claims in Canada has gone down in January, the latest official statistics reveal.

Although the decrease in EI claims was seen in almost all the seven Canadian provinces, but, Ontario witnessed the biggest ever decline in the number of EI beneficiaries with the figures going down to 640,200 by 13,300.

January 2011 saw a decline of 2.0 percent from the month of December 2010 when the number of renewal as well as initial claims was 242,400. The figures matched the levels of EI in June 2010.

Biggest decline in EI claimants in Ontario, B.C., Alberta and Quebec—

Fewer people submitting claims for EI in Ontario, B.C.(British Columbia), Quebec and Alberta. Ontario was leading by registering the biggest decline in the number of EI beneficiaries while the Canadian provinces Quebec and Alberta followed by each showing a decrease of 1,600 and 500 EI claims.

This showed a decrease of 24.2 percent. In Ontario, there were 11,200 lesser recipients of EI claims in January this year showing a fall of 5.5 percent over the last month to take the total figures to 192,630. B.C. showed the EI claimants go down by 2.4 percent (or 1,870) to 76,140.

A drop of 29.8 percent was seen in January 2011 over January 2010 in the number of those receiving EI (employment insurance) benefits in Calgary taking the figures to 14,590, Statistics Canada has revealed.

A fall was seen in the number of people in Edmonton claiming their employment insurance benefits in January this year making the fall as the 10th decline in a row. Stats Can figures show a fall of 17.4 percent (or 3,220) year-over-year taking the claimants down to 15,280.

According to Dan Sumber, a Financial economist with ATB, January witnessed the biggest decline since June 2010 and is an indicator of a further downward trend in EI claimants in the coming times.

Watching the national trend also reiterates a decline in the number of beneficiaries of EI in January making it the sixth decline in the period of seven months, official Stats Can figures show.

Between January 2010 and January 2011, there was a decline of 9.2 percent in EI beneficiaries nationwide. Canadian province New Brunswick was an exception to the general declining trend in EI claimants by making a increase of 1,100.
