New selection criteria for Canada’s points system

This has been affirmed by Canada immigration minister Jason Kenney.

Relaunch of biggest Canada immigration program—Canada is all set to announce the relaunch of its biggest immigration program in May next year. And the focus of this changed immigration program will be ensure that qualified foreigners including doctors and engineers do work as doctors and engineers in Canada and not just be compelled to become cabbies for earning a livelihood in Canada.

So, this is the biggest concerns of the redesigned Federal Skilled Worker Program when it gets underway in May 2013, Kenney affirmed.

Language proficiency, youth-top priority for Canada points system—The federal immigration points system will have new criteria for selection of immigrants after going through a makeover in May next year.

Speaking about the selection process, Kenney said the process of awarding points will be changed for the points system.

Several key changes are going to be introduced to Federal Skilled Worker Program to make sure skilled and qualified immigrants get the opportunity to realize their true potential by working at jobs in their chosen field of expertise.

The new selection criteria for Canada’s federal skilled worker program

• Will give higher points to younger foreigners;

• Points allocation for language proficiency will undergo a change;

• Education and work experience criteria will also be changed.

New grading system—The changed Canada’s points system will give points to immigrants on a scale of 100 for factors like age, education, language ability, work experience and Canada adaptability.

Maximum points for age will be 12 for those aged between 18 and 35 years. Language proficiency test will be mandatory for all applicants.

Pre-assessment of credentials will be required to compare it with the system of Canada after which points allocation will be done.

Changes aimed to curb unemployment, underemployment of Canada immigrants—For quite some time now, majority of newcomers coming to Canada have been struggling with joblessness as well as underemployment, said Kenney.

However, this is quite detrimental for not only the immigrants but also to the economy of Canada, he clarified.

The changed Canada Federal Skilled Worker Program will become effective in May this year. The federal government had temporarily halted the federal skilled worker program in July this year by putting a freeze on the acceptance of new Canada visa applications for this immigration program.
