New Australian immigration rules opposed by opposition
by Mary Jones - April 27, 2011
Australia, 27th April: Proposals for changing Australian immigration rules have come in for a severe criticism from the Greens and the Coalition government.

Both the parties are claiming that plans for introducing tougher Australian visa policies will result in bringing back the rules earlier denounced by the Australian government. Planned changes in Australian immigration rules to control violence in detention center-
It may be noted that the proposals to be introduced by the Australian government are in response to the recent outbreak of violence in Australia immigration detention center at Sydney. The rioters indulged in burning of the buildings of the detention center.
Immigration minister warns against such acts—Chris Bowen, Australian immigration minister, has sent clear signals that such a behavior will not be tolerated by Australia.
Moreover, he has clarified that such acts could ruin the chances of getting an Australian visa by those found guilty of such offence.
While authenticating the tough stand to be taken by the Australian government, Bowen said that the planned changes in Australian immigration rules will allow the Australian immigration department- DIAC (Department of Immigration and Citizenship), to deny granting of Australian permanent visas to those asylum seekers in criminal conviction. However, asylum seekers who are genuine refugees will be offered full protection, the immigration minister asserted.
Australian government awaits support of Opposition or Independents and Greens---The changes planned to be introduced by the government of Australia in the Australian immigration rules are however subject to the support of either of the two parties, namely either the Opposition party or the Independents and the Greens.
Scott Morrison, the official spokesperson of Tony Abbott, the Opposition Leader, said that the Australian immigration minister must provide details of the current rules which, as alleged by the minister, prohibit him from using his powers.
Greens suspicious about planned changes—Sarah Hanson Young, the official spokeswoman of the Greens Immigration, seems to be suspicious of the intentions of Chris Bowen. She stated that toughening the Australian visa rules is a lame excuse of the Labor Party for reintroduction of the earlier denounced Temporary Protection Visas in Australia.
Bowen, however, denied getting once again towards Temporary Protection Visas in the nation. He has maintained that the government will provide some form of a provisional Australian visa to the asylum seekers failing the character test but requiring protection.
